MEET THE CHOREOGRAPHERS - BRITTANY OSBORN

Meet Brittany Osborn

Brittany Osborn is a fourth year Dance major. The title of her piece is One. Learn more about Brittany and her piece below!

Can you give us a brief description of your dance? The style of movement, inspiration behind the choreography, message of the dance, etc.
My piece is more modern based. I got the inspiration for my piece from all of last year. I would be visiting home and my parents would have the news on and it would be one bad event after another and the reaction I had to it was why is this happening and what can I do. So I made my piece about how I believe this generation can change the tragic events and make them less of a norm.

How do you personally prepare for your rehearsals? Do you choreograph on the spot or come with material prepared? What is your process like?
My rehearsals before unplugged I would come with all the material and just teach it. This helped get the whole piece pretty much done before showing. After being picked to have my piece in Afterimages, now the rehearsals are a little different. I added a few people so I’ve worked on getting them to know the whole piece. Now there is a lot more coaching and getting everyone to look similar. The whole time I was very open to suggestions and even let the dancers take movement from the phrases I taught to create their own part in the piece.

How do you think your cast would describe you as a choreographer/teacher?
I asked some of my cast to describe me as a choreographer and this is what they had to say:

  • “You are very willing and open to others ideas. You like when others voice their opinions.”
  • “You want your cast to feel comfortable which means you are very willing to change things to help your cast feel comfortable in the movement.”
How does being a Choreographer for Afterimages differ from choreographing for any other projects? If you’ve never choreographed before, how have you approached this process differently than when you were just a performer/dancer?
Afterimages is all about bringing the students together. So I find this process to be very personal with my cast because they are my peers, so I appreciate their opinions and ideas a lot more.

MEET THE CHOREOGRAPHERS - KATELYN PIEPMEIER

Meet Katelyn Piepmeier          Katelyn is a fifth year dance and business entrepreneurship double major. The title of her piece is Communion. Learn more about Katelyn and her piece below! Can you give us a brief description of your dance? The style of movement, inspiration behind the choreography, message of the dance, etc.          I started with Contact Improvisation and through the process discovered set material that relies on weight sharing, partnering, and group connection. I was interested in the possibilities and limitations of having four bodies stay connected through touch throughout the entire dance. This piece represents the truth that the actions of one individual affect everyone else whether they are intended to or not. It is not our choice but rather something outside ourselves that causes this unity. How do you personally prepare for your rehearsals? Do you choreograph on the spot or come with material prepared? What is your process like?          While I do pu

Can you give us a brief description of your dance? The style of movement, inspiration behind the choreography, message of the dance, etc.          Leaves is a work in three parts and follows the journey of human life. The work explores memories, acceptance, beginnings, and endings. How do you personally prepare for your rehearsals? Do you choreography on the spot or come with material prepared? What is your process like?          In the past, I've tried to come up with material prior to rehearsal and relay the material to my cast, but important details always got lost in translation. I decided this year to take my time and think of everything during rehearsal as I worked with/watched my dancers. I've been very focused on minimalism and reality for this work, so I've approached this work in rehearsal wi
