MEET THE CHOREOGRAPHERS - SEAN FRENZEL

Meet Sean Frenzel

Sean is a third year dance and arts management major with a communications minor. The title of his piece is “I Love the Friends I Have Gathered on this Thin Raft” -Jim Morrison. Learn more about Sean and his piece below.

Can you give us a brief description of your dance? The style of movement, inspiration behind the choreography, message of the dance, etc.
My piece is a tap dance focusing on the appreciation of the friends and loved ones we are lucky enough to share our brief existence with. Every moment in history has led up to where you are now and the relationships you have. It would have been so easy for a small, simple variable to have been different and made it so you never even met the people you hold most dear. For me, this consideration of cosmic luck makes life so much more beautiful.

How do you personally prepare for your rehearsals? Do you choreograph on the spot or come with material prepared? What is your process like?
I usually come to rehearsal with a rhythmic idea in mind and with a fun step to base my choreograph off of. Usually a bulk of the actual choreography is made on the spot in rehearsal though. Having another person to do the steps with and bounce ideas off of makes the process feel more collaborative and organic, which I believe is at the heart of Afterimages.

How do you think your cast would describe you as a choreographer/teacher?
I hope my cast would describe me as a flexible and fun leader. I try to adjust my process as best as I can to fit the needs of my cast, and I hope I do a good job at that. Afterimages is all about inclusion, and I really try to make sure that my cast doesn’t feel isolated from my vision or process.

How does being a Choreographer for Afterimages differ from choreographing for any other projects? If you’ve never choreographed before, how have you approached this process differently than when you were just a performer/dancer?
Choreographing for Afterimages has a much more collaborative feeling to it. This show is all about getting as many students involved and feeling welcomed in the process, including in the creation of the dance. This isn’t a commissioned piece where your client wants your style specifically, but rather the choreographer comes in with a vision and the whole team puts themselves into it to make a piece of art where the final product is greater than the work of the individual.

State your name, major(s)/minor(s), class, and name of your piece.          The movement style I choreographed is modern with a few pedestrian inspired qualities. Formally, the work takes a journey into the everyday life of an African-American women. Within the journey, there are adversities that one must face when walking into the world. How do you personally prepare for your rehearsals? Do you choreograph on the spot or come with material prepared? What is your process like?          Often I choreograph on the spot. The work explores memories, acceptance, beginnings, and endings. How do you personally prepare for your rehearsals? Do you choreography on the spot or come with material prepared? What is your process like?          In the past, I've tried to come up with material prior to rehearsal and relay the material to my cast, but important details always got lost in translation. I decided this year to take my time and think of everything during rehearsal as I worked with/watched my dancers. I've been very focused on minimalism and ...
